Educational Seminars At the 2008 Annual NHLA Convention & Exhibit Showcase, you’ll have the chance to participate in education sessions ranging from dealing with the economy, certification and working with international markets. You’ll hear from inspiring keynote speakers and have many opportunities to talk to your peers in your region and around the country. Friday, October 10 Truth About Trees - 9:30 am - 10:30 am The Hardwood Forest Foundation is presenting its Truth About Trees program, which teaches children across North America that harvesting trees is not always harmful to the environment and explores the many items that have tree products in their makeup. Special guests for the event will be approximately 50 San Francisco area elementary school children. The event is open to all attendees and is a great opportunity to receive a true understanding of the impact the Truth About Trees program has on children. Saturday, October 11 The Economy and the Hardwood Industry - 8 am - 9 am With the United States and world economy facing many challenges, this seminar will address how the hardwood industry is being affected. Topics will include the state of the domestic economy, an overview of the global hardwood industry, and a debate on the direction of ongoing changes. Speaker will include experts on both the domestic and global industry, such as George Barrett. Certification of Hardwoods - 10 am til Noon This seminar will address the growing demand for certified wood products domestically and worldwide. Industry experts will discuss the process of forest certification in North America, procurement and market conditions in Europe, and potential future developments and trends. Speakers will include representatives from various certification programs and international industry experts such as Rupert Oliver. Grading Seminar - 10 am - 1 pm This seminar will provide a hands-on exhibition of the application of the grading rules. Attendees will get a chance to see how the grades are applied to lumber and how proper application increases the value of lumber. Graded lumber provides a common voice for the industry worldwide. Rules Open Forum - 11 am - Noon The NHLA grading rules continue to be the foundation of the association, and they help differentiate North American hardwoods in the marketplace. The process for the cyclical review of the rules will begin next year, and this seminar provides an open forum for the industry to discuss the rules. Speakers will include the NHLA Chief Inspector. International Markets Breakout Sessions - 2 pm - 3:30 pm As the hardwood industry becomes increasingly global, these seminar will address market conditions in regions of importance throughout the world. Speakers will include representatives from the American Hardwood Export Council.
